DOT Inspection

Department of Transportation vehicle safety inspection required for commercial motor vehicles, covering brakes, tires, lights, and other critical systems.

DOT inspections are safety examinations of commercial motor vehicles and their drivers conducted by the Department of Transportation and state enforcement agencies. These inspections are a cornerstone of highway safety regulation, ensuring that trucks, buses, and other commercial vehicles meet federal safety standards before operating on public roads.

The Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance (CVSA) defines six levels of roadside inspections. Level I is the most comprehensive — a full 37-step inspection covering both the driver and the vehicle, including under-vehicle examination. Level II is a walk-around inspection of the driver and vehicle exterior. Level III is a driver-only inspection checking credentials, logbooks, and medical certification. Level IV is a special inspection for a specific item. Level V involves inspecting the vehicle without the driver present. Level VI is specifically for transuranic waste and highway-route-controlled quantities of radioactive material.

During a vehicle inspection, officers examine critical safety components: brakes (adjustment, air leaks, hose condition), tires (tread depth, inflation, damage), lights and reflectors, steering components, suspension, frame and body, coupling devices (fifth wheel, pintle hook), exhaust system, and cargo securement. Driver inspections verify a valid CDL, medical certificate, hours-of-service compliance, and look for signs of impairment.

Vehicles or drivers found with critical safety violations receive an out-of-service (OOS) order, prohibiting further operation until the violation is corrected. OOS violations are recorded in the carrier's CSA profile and can significantly impact insurance rates and business relationships. Annual DOT inspections are required for all commercial vehicles, and carriers must maintain records of all inspections and repairs.
