Drop Trailer

A logistics arrangement where a carrier drops a pre-loaded trailer at a facility for the shipper or receiver to load or unload at their convenience.

A drop trailer program (also called trailer pool or drop-and-hook) is a logistics arrangement where a carrier positions an empty or pre-loaded trailer at a shipper's or receiver's facility, leaving it for the facility to load or unload at their convenience. When the trailer is ready, the driver returns to swap it — dropping a new empty and hooking up the loaded trailer (or vice versa). This contrasts with live loading, where the driver waits at the dock while the trailer is loaded or unloaded.

Drop trailer programs offer significant advantages for both carriers and shippers. For carriers, the primary benefit is reduced detention time — drivers spend minutes swapping trailers instead of hours waiting for a live load. This dramatically improves asset utilization and driver productivity. A driver in a drop-and-hook operation can typically complete 20-30% more loads per week than one doing live loads. For shippers, drop trailers provide scheduling flexibility, as they can load and unload on their own timeline without the pressure of a waiting driver.

However, drop programs require substantial investment. The carrier must maintain a larger trailer fleet, as trailers sitting at customer locations are assets that aren't actively generating revenue. Tracking trailer locations and managing the trailer pool requires logistics coordination. Shippers need adequate yard space to store trailers and may need to provide trailer positioning equipment (yard tractors, hostlers).

Drop trailer agreements typically include terms regarding maximum dwell time (how long a trailer can remain at the facility before per-diem charges begin), trailer condition and cleanliness requirements, liability for damage while on the shipper's premises, and minimum volume commitments that justify the carrier's trailer investment.
