PM Schedule

Preventive Maintenance Schedule — a predetermined maintenance plan based on mileage, hours, or time intervals to prevent breakdowns and extend vehicle life.

A Preventive Maintenance (PM) schedule is a systematic, proactive approach to vehicle maintenance designed to identify and address potential issues before they cause breakdowns, safety hazards, or costly emergency repairs. For commercial trucking operations, a well-executed PM program is not optional — it is a fundamental requirement for safety, regulatory compliance, and profitability.

PM schedules are typically organized into tiered service levels at different mileage or time intervals. A common structure includes: PM-A (every 10,000-15,000 miles) covering oil and filter changes, fluid checks, visual inspections, and tire pressure; PM-B (every 25,000-30,000 miles) adding brake inspections, belt and hose checks, steering and suspension inspection, and air system checks; PM-C (every 50,000-60,000 miles or annually) including comprehensive DOT-level inspection, coolant and transmission service, wheel bearing inspection, and electrical system testing.

Federal regulations under 49 CFR Part 396 require motor carriers to systematically inspect, repair, and maintain all commercial vehicles under their control. While the regulations don't prescribe specific PM intervals, carriers must demonstrate a systematic maintenance program and keep detailed records of all inspections and repairs. During a compliance review or audit, the FMCSA examines these maintenance records to assess the carrier's safety practices.

The economic case for PM is compelling. Industry data consistently shows that preventive maintenance costs roughly one-third of what reactive (breakdown) maintenance costs, factoring in emergency repair premiums, towing, lost revenue from downtime, driver detention, missed delivery penalties, and the potential for secondary damage when a failure cascades to other components. A disciplined PM program typically achieves vehicle uptime rates of 95% or higher, compared to 80-85% for reactive-maintenance-only operations.
