Tarping

The process of covering flatbed loads with tarps to protect cargo from weather, debris, and road hazards during transport.

Tarping is the process of securing protective covers (tarpaulins) over cargo loaded on flatbed trailers to shield it from weather, road debris, UV exposure, and contamination during transport. While it may seem straightforward, tarping is one of the most physically demanding and potentially dangerous tasks in trucking, requiring drivers to climb on loads, handle heavy materials, and work at heights in all weather conditions.

Several types of tarps are used depending on the cargo and situation. Lumber tarps (typically 24' × 27' or larger) are heavy-duty covers designed for tall, stacked loads like lumber, steel, and building materials, featuring drop flaps on each side and end. Steel tarps (smaller, lighter, and without flaps) are used for lower-profile loads like steel coils and plate. Smoke tarps (or nose tarps) cover just the front of the load to protect against exhaust soot and road spray. Machine tarps are custom-fitted covers for equipment and machinery.

Proper tarping technique involves more than simply throwing a cover over the load. The tarp must be secured with rubber bungee straps (bungees) or ropes at regular intervals along both sides, ensuring it is tight enough to prevent wind billowing (which can tear tarps and create hazardous road debris) while not so tight that it damages the cargo. Tarps must extend past the edges of the load to prevent moisture from reaching the freight, and all corners and edges should be folded and secured to prevent flapping.

Many flatbed drivers include tarping fees in their rates, typically ranging from $50 to $150 per tarp required. Some loads require multiple tarps. While tarping is a standard expectation of flatbed hauling, its physical demands and safety risks contribute to the premium rates that flatbed freight commands compared to dry van operations. Some carriers invest in rolling tarp systems (Conestoga trailers) that allow a driver to cover and uncover loads from the ground using a retractable tarp system, greatly reducing the physical effort and safety risks.
